A Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity

Minneapolis is embarking on a once-in-a-generation opportunity to design and build an iconic, 4.2-acre public open space downtown. Downtown East Commons will be a landmark amenity and a highlight of downtown for families, residents and visitors alike.

To provide feedback on the design approach for this space, please attend the second open community meeting being held on Wednesday April 8th at Mill City Museum!

Here are some highlights of what we know about the plans thus far:

  • Initial work is expected to begin in the early fall of 2015, with an ‘Interim Commons’ space available for public use beginning in July 2016.
  • Further enhancements are expected starting in spring 2017, continuing until December 2017, at which point the ‘Ultimate Commons’ will be completed and the final vision for the space will be fully executed.
  • After public comment is received on the design concept alternatives (scheduled for the upcoming 5/8/15 meeting), the next public meeting has been tentatively set for Wednesday 5/27, at which point the schematic design will be unveiled.

The design of the space is expected to be finalized by the end of the summer of 2015.
