Reflections on a Good Year

One year ago, representatives from the North Loop Neighborhood AssociationDowntown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association and Elliot Park Neighborhood, Inc. (collectively the Downtown Minneapolis School Initiative) wrote a letter to Minneapolis Public Schools. We expressed our desire to redraw the Minneapolis Public School (MPS) attendance boundaries so that all children living downtown would attend the same community elementary school.

Following the letter, MPS staff and Board Members met with our group as we shared our neighborhood school survey results and thoughts on a downtown elementary school.

What a year it has been!

In the fall of 2015 MPS will be opening a newly-renovated Webster Elementary School, located across the river at 425 5th St NE. It will be the default community elementary school for all children in the newly formed 1G attendance area, which includes the downtown neighborhoods of the North LoopDowntown WestDowntown East and Elliot Park in addition to neighborhoods on the northeast side of the Mississippi River.

The school will start as a High 5 (Pre-Kindergarden) to Grade 2 school, expanding up to Grade 5 with roughly 460 children at full capacity. Minneapolis Public Schools has recently selected the very capable and intelligent Ginger Kranz as the new Principal of Webster and she is now leading regular ‘Friends of Webster’ community meetings as we prepare for the school to open next fall.

This past summer the Downtown Minneapolis School Initiative committee became the Downtown Families MPLS organization. While solving for a downtown community school was very important, we realized there were other issues we needed to address if we wanted to attract and keep families living downtown.

Our organization is in its infancy, so please check out our websiteFacebook, and Twitter pages regarding events, issues and how to become engaged with Downtown Families MPLS. You can also subscribe to our newsletter to receive updates right in your Inbox.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who has given numerous hours to make the Webster Elementary School and Downtown Families MPLS a reality and help make Downtown Minneapolis a premier family-friendly neighborhood.
